Maria Jerez (ES)
Maria Jerez (° Madrid, 1978) is active all over Europe. Her work travels in between cinema, choreography, theatre, architecture and visual arts. Her main interest: ‘the unspeakable’. She collaborated with a.o. Cuqui Jerez, Jerôme Bel, Gary Stevens and Juan Domínguez and regularly works at BUDA Kortrijk; she created Ba-Deedly-Deedly-Deedly-Dum Ba-Boop-Be-Doop! (Buda Vista #4 - march ’14) in Budascoop, realised Alma de Rimel’s concert Blinking a scream (Buda Vista #6 - feb’15) and the visual performance BLOB (première Buda Vista #8 – feb. ’16) in Budatower. And she learned Dutch for the project Maria gaat naar school.
Maria Jerez: What is Third // BLOB
What is Third alters the conditions and circumstances under which a piece of work is developed and seek to share the resources of its own process. The meeting between 2, 3, 4 or hundreds of people and references is the main tool of this project, letting these meetings function as an interference in the work. In this project "reading a book" becomes "a reading group", "watching a film" becomes "a cinema club", "reading an article" becomes "a public lecture" "having a conversation with a friend about individual artistic processes" becomes "a parallel residency" in order to share knowledge, to create our own in-puts and to create unexpected encounters and while doing so; a piece of work is under construction.
The piece that Maria Jerez has been working on inside her project What Is Third is called BLOB.
BLOB faces an enigma. The enigma of how the meeting of two can create a third thing, a third dimension, something that was not there before, and that arises from an unintended manner. This “third thing” while arising, transforms both: 1 and 2 ... thus producing a shift, a process of de-identification.
In spring 2015 Maria Jerez invited Edurne Rubio to share time and space in Madrid with her, for this occassion Edurne Rubio invites Maria Jerez to share time and space with her in Kortrijk; and while Maria continues working on BLOB finding a piece without content; Edurne Rubio will be working next door on the research for her coming project Light Years Ago; and, while doing so, both artists will find moments to continue old conversations, to be critical and to contaminate each other.
