« You're pushing, pushing and then it begins to pull you. »
In newpolyphonies rewired the presence of sound is contagious, stirring the air and wobbling wave-patterns to the point of sweet vertigo. Among 20 little loudspeakers the listener surrenders to an ever-changing journey, where elastic landscapes arise before they sink back under the skin.
As always in the work of Myriam Van Imschoot all the sounds in newpolyphonies rewired are made by the bare human body and voice without technical added effect, as surprising as it might be. This time the singers attune their polyphony to the traffic of airplanes and the drum of insects beyond points of recognition of what is individual and what is collective, human or machine.
The sound installation of Myriam Van Imschoot and HYOID voices, developed with WALPURGIS, is based on the recordings of the concert newpolyphonies where 4 singers of HYOID were joined by 17 local performers in a performance at Muziekcentrum De Bijloke. Rewiring this event transforms it to a new level of immersion.
Myriam Van Imschoot lives and works in Brussels and makes performances, creates sound poetry and vocal pieces, exhibits video and sound installations. She holds a unique position in the Belgian art field, moving between institutional fields and media, with a keen interest to experiment with contexts when not creating her own.
HYOID is a Brussels-based group of classically trained vocal soloists specialized in new music and transdisciplinary performance. The group strives to challenge and expand traditional concert formats, while cultivating close partnerships with composers, performers and artists of its generation. They perform a cappella as well as with instruments, tape or electronics, and adapt their line-up to each production.
WALPURGIS is a dynamic and polyphonic company of singers, actors, musicians and other artists. The integral working is a mirror of the society they dream of: generous, sustainable, continously moving and unafraid of contradictions and extremes.
