The world is going to the dogs and the birds are spreading the news! They used to do so in old animal fables too. And in Aristophanes and Walt Disney.

What is nature telling us? Myriam Van Imschoot looks for an answer in early folk music, in which people imitate natural sounds. But while out walking she heard birds that had adopted ‘human’ sounds in their singing, such as lumberjacks’ chainsaws. And in David Attenborough’s nature documentaries she found other examples of birds that sound like ringtones, lawnmowers or car alarms. It’s hilarious, but also disturbing. The thin line separating nature and culture is dissolving.

What Nature Says is a radiophonic performance, a play for six performers to watch and listen to, and which occasionally resembles a ‘grim(m)’ eco-fairytale. You won’t believe your ears.
