At the Gare Saint Sauveur, lille3000 hosts the exhibition Ola Cuba!, which presents the works of more than 35 Cuban artists, including a dozen productions. The participating artists are painters, photographers, video artists, visual artists, graphic designers, architects… They have the particularity of having been born between the end of the 60s and the mid-80s, and to have started their career in the 90s, during the time of the “Special Period” declared by Fidel Castro more than 25 years ago. As a result of the disintegration of the Soviet bloc, this era is marked by a major economic crisis for the island that depended on the support of the USSR. Artists of this generation have matured under the embargo imposed by the United States. Theirs is a freedom of expression that is still fragile yet unprecedented, that addresses the difficult question of memory but also of openness to the world and other models, to other dreams. Sensitive, committed, enlightened, funny, diversified, their works speak about history, architecture, ethnic diversity, landscapes of skies, lands and seas, migrations, isolation, music, colours, of severance and inheritance. These artists, with strength and subtlety, have forged their own vision.
